[팩트인뉴스= Dongsu Kim] The South Korean presidential Blue House dismissed US President Donald Trump's comments that indicated Seoul's agreement to pay additional $500 million toward maintaining American troops in the country.

At a cabinet meeting in Washington on Tuesday, Trump said that South Korea gave a green light on paying $500 million more as part of a deal that shares the cost of keeping around 28,500 US troops on Korean soil.

“They were paying about $500 million for $5 billion worth of protection,” Trump said, as quoted by Reuters. “And we have to do better than that. So they’ve agreed to pay $500 million more.”

In the previous agreement—which was discontinued due to disagreements in December—Seoul paid a contribution of 960 billion won ($875 million) in 2018.

The report added that officials from both countries initiated an agreement on Sunday, which states that South Korea would revamp its contribution to only under 1.04 trillion won ($927 million)—an increase of around $70.3 million. When asked about Trump's $500 million figure, Blue House spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said that it “shouldn’t be taken as a fait accompli”.

During the negotiations, the US demanded that South Korea should pay 50 percent more compared to its contribution last year, South Korean officials said. The new deal, which must still be approved by Seoul's parliament, also amounts to an increase of around eight percent. Kim said the agreement has a one-year validity and could be extended for another year if the two parties agree.

“Both sides will consider whether a raise is needed and it’s also possible that they would agree to maintain the current level,” the spokesman said.

The US and South Korea both struggled to come to a breakthrough amid at least 10 rounds of negotiations since March 2018 and despite Trump's repeated demands for a sharp increase in Seoul's contribution.

트럼프 대통령은 워싱턴에서 열린 내각 회의에서 한국에 약 28,500명의 미군을 유지하는 비용을 분담하는 협상의 일환으로 5억 달러를 더 지불하는 것에 대해 녹색 불을 밝혔다고 말했다.

로이터 통신이 인용 한 트럼프는 “50억 달러의 가치를 보호하기 위해 5억 달러를 지불했다”고 말했다. 

지난 12월 중단된 이 협정은 2018년에 960억 원 (875억 달러)을 기부했다.

이 보고서는 또 양국 관계자들이 일요일 한국이 약 7030만 달러 늘어난 1조 4400억 원 미만으로 재투자한다는 내용의 협정을 체결했다고 덧붙였다. 김의겸 청와대 대변인은 트럼프의 5억 달러 규모에 대한 질문에 "기정사실로 받아들여져서는 안 된다"고 말했다.

협상에서 미국은 지난해 한국과 비교해 한국이 50%를 더 지불해야 한다고 요구했으며, 서울 의회의 승인을 받아야 하는 새로운 거래 역시 약 8% 증가할 것이라고 말했다. 김 대변인은 이 협정은 1년의 유효 기간을 가지며, 양측이 동의하면 1년 더 연장될 수 있다고 말했다.

"양측 모두 인상이 필요한지 여부를 고려할 것이며, 현재의 수준을 유지하는 데 동의할 수도 있다"라고 대변인은 덧붙였다.

한미 양국은 2018년 3월 이후 최소 10차례의 협상과 트럼프의 한국 분담금 대폭 인상 요구에도 불구하고 돌파구를 찾기 위해 안간힘을 썼다.
