Dongsu Kim] Russia has arrested a Danish citizen and sentenced him six years in prison after being declared a member of an “extremist” Jehovah’s Witness group by Russian courts.

According to the BBC’s report, the man, identified as Dennis Christensen, “was arrested in the city of Oryol nearly two years ago after police stormed a prayer service”. This organization, in accordance to Russian authorities’ intel, had already been outlawed by Russian courts in 2017 for being “extremist”.

During the hearing, the judge insisted that the six-year imprisonment had been a “minimal sentence”, although Denmark’s foreign minister Anders Samuelsen immediately released a statement in support of Christensen’s freedom, imploring them to uphold and maintain respect for other religions.

The situation is a little difficult, though, considering Russian President Vladimir Putin himself said back in December that the extremist allegations were simply nonsense and that he “promised to look into the prosecution of members.”

More recent news points back to Putin’s office, but to his spokesman this time, sharing BBC that they believed that whether or not the extremism is true, the Russian government must have sensed that it went from purely being just a man practicing his faith, and that there could be “some reason” for it.

Whatever that reason may be, it didn’t stop any other organizations getting involved in the matter as Amnesty International spoke up in support of Christensen’s right to practice his faith and argued that Russia does not have the right to hold Christensen in jail for simply exercising his right to practice his religion freely.

Christensen is still in a tight spot right now, and it doesn’t help that Russia has long had a reputation with the Jehovah’s Witness faith since it had been under Stalin in the Soviet Union, where many Jehovah’s Witnesses had been persecuted, like Christensen, for practicing their faith.
