[팩트인뉴스= Dongsu Kim] US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping soon in an effort to close off a comprehensive trade deal as Trump and his major trade negotiator both mentioned substantial progress in two days of the high-level negotiations.

Trump said he was hopeful that Washington and Beijing would be able to seal "the biggest deal ever made," during a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White House. Meanwhile, the Chinese trade delegation said the two days of high-level discussions resulted into "important progress," Reuters reported, citing China's official Xinhua news agency.

There were no disclosed plans for a meeting with Xi, but Trump said they could possibly hold more than one meeting. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were both invited to send a negotiating team from the US to Beijing by mid-February, with dates still pending.

Reuters reported that at the end of the trade talks, Liu told Trump that China would create a new and immediate commitment to ramping up soybean purchases. Later on, an administration official clarified that the amount as a total of five million tonnes, which would effectively double the amount Beijing bought since it resumed limited purchases in December.

Trump had a positive reaction to China's announcement, after the purchases were largely cut off due to Beijing's retaliatory tariffs, and said that it would "make our farmers very happy." In their statement, the Chinese delegation also said the Asian giant will increase imports of US agricultural, energy, service and industrial products, Xinhua reported.

Despite China's offering of increased US purchases as a means to resolve trade disputes, negotiators went into more sensitive issues such as the US demands that Beijing take measures to protect American intellectual property as well as end policies that, according to Washington, force US firms to turn over technology to their Chinese counterparts.

Lighthizer said there was "substantial progress" on these concerns, which includes verification mechanisms to "enforce" China's follow-through on any reform commitments that it will make.

"At this point, it’s impossible for me to predict success. But we’re in a place that if things work out, it could happen,” said the trade representative, who later added that the US objective was to make Beijing's commitments “more specific, all-encompassing and enforceable” with an action measure if China fails to follow through.

트럼프, 中 무역 협상 마무리 위해 회담열어

시진핑 주석과의 회담 계획은 공개되지 않았지만, 트럼프는 시 주석과 한 번 이상 회담을 할 수 있을 것이라고 말했다. 로버트 라이타이저 미 무역대표부(USTR) 대표와 스티븐 므누신 재무장관은 2월 중순까지 미국에서 베이징으로 협상단을 파견할 것을 요청받았는데, 아직 날짜는 미정이다.

로이터 통신은 무역 협상이 끝날 무렵 리우가 트럼프에게 중국이 콩 구매를 늘리기 위한 새로운 즉각적인 의지를 만들 것이라고 말했다. 나중에 관리 당국은 총 5백만 톤의 양으로, 베이징이 12월 제한 구매를 재개한 이래로 구매 양을 두 배로 늘릴 것이라고 밝혔다.

트럼프는 중국의 보복 관세로 인해 구매가 중단된 이후 "농민들을 매우 행복하게 만들 것"이라는 중국의 발표에 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 중국 대표단은 또한 아시아 대표단이 미국 농업, 에너지, 서비스 및 산업 제품의 수입을 늘릴 것이라고 밝혔다.

중국이 무역분쟁을 해결하기 위한 수단으로 미국의 구매를 늘리겠다고 제안했음에도 불구하고, 협상가들은 미국의 지적 재산권을 보호하기 위한 조치를 하고, 미국 기업들로 하여금 그들의 중국 회사에게 기술을 넘겨주도록 강요하는 정책을 끝내라는 미국의 요구와 같은 더 민감한 문제들에 들어갔다.
